Guidelines on the application for renewal of an existing passport

  • Applications for renewal of a passport should be made on Form ‘O’ (IM 37) which can downloaded from the Downloads section of this website. Alternatively, you may obtain the application form from the Consulate by visiting the place.
  • The validity of a passport can be renewed only up to a period of 10 years from the original date of issue. Please use Form ‘O’ for this purpose. The validity of passports which are over ten years from the date of issue cannot be further extended.
  • In the case of valid passports in which all pages are exhausted, a new passport may be obtained for which Form ‘K’ should be used. Please note that extra pages cannot be added to such passports.
  • The duly completed application should be submitted to the Consulate with the following:
  • Passport to be renewed/ altered
  • Supporting documents for the alterations
  • Please refer to Consular Fees section for relevant fee for the renewal of an existing passport.
  • Fee shall be paid by cash and please note that cheques will not be accepted.
  • All other information should be furnished as required in the application form.
  • The renewal process of an existing passport would take around one hour to complete.

Guidelines on the application for alteration of an existing passport

  • Applications for alteration of a passport should be made on Form ‘O’ (IM 37) which can downloaded from the Downloads section of this website. Alternatively, you may obtain the application form from the Consulate by visiting the place.
  • Form ‘O’ should also be used when a person requires an endorsement in the passport regarding the following:
  • Change of name consequent to marriage (original or notarized copy of marriage certificate is required. Marriage certificates issued in Sri Lanka should be certified by the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Colombo).
  • Change of name (provided the name in the birth certificate has been altered in accordance with the birth registration regulations of Sri Lanka and the relevant birth certificate which has been notarized should be submitted).
  • Change of employment (letter from employer or similar proof required).
  • Include or Change National Identity Card (NIC) number. (The original National Identity Card should be provided)
  • If a passport has been issued with a restricted endorsement and such endorsement has to be amended or deleted, the passport should be submitted along with relevant supporting documents.
  • If the applicant wishes to change his/ her signature or photograph due to a change in appearance, a new passport should be obtained.
  • Please do not affix any stamps. The applicant should place his signature in the cage at the bottom of the page.

Important: Please note that:

Submission of forged documents and making false declarations relating to citizenship is a punishable offence. Fees will not be refunded in these circumstances.

Incomplete applications will be returned and consular fees will not be refunded.
